Apple isn’t good at updating some of their product lineups, for instance – the Mac Pro was last released on 2013 which is 4 years ago. The delay has already caused Apple to face a whole lot of social media outrage, also the comparison between Mac Pro and a trash can isn’t new. The iPad Air 2 is in a better position than the Mac Pro we should say, it was released in 2014 and also the design isn’t like a trash can either. Apple seems to have moved on with the iPad Pro, but some current rumors suggest otherwise – Apple is planning to release an iPad Air 3 which would be an affordable Apple device in 9.7 inch display form factor.
When is the iPad Air 3 due?
Speaking of due, it is in fact long overdue since March 2015 – that’s when an iPad Air 3 should have come out on the 1 year anniversary. Apple iPads usually arrive during or after March every year. However, some chip problems have been reported and due to that, some tech pundits have estimated a possible delay in the next iPad unveiling and shipment. If Apple can’t release an iPad Air 3 by March or April of this year, the release event might get shifted towards September and might even be merged with the iPhone unveiling event.
iPad Air lineup has always been equipped with a 9.7 inch display. There are 7.9 inch and 12.9 inch tablets in different iPad ranges, but none of them are Air. Therefore, we may safely assume that if there’s an Air 3 tablet from Apple, it is more likely to have a 9.7 inch display with Apple’s signature Retina resolution for iPads 1536×2048 pixels. The world is moving on with 4K but Apple bluntly refuses to even put more pixels in their iPhone models.
To distinguish the iPad Air 3 from the iPad Pro, there should be prominent design marks all around on the tablet body. Thickness might reduce a little bit. The chassis is going to be made of aluminum that’s for sure as using glass for a tablet would be a massive mistake. 240×169.5×6.1 is a possible dimension for the iPad Air 3; and the weight should be no more than 500 grams otherwise the name ‘Air’ would make no real sense.
An IP67 water & dust resistance may be added to the iPad Air 3, for a more rugged approach to using this tablet. Removal of headphone jack is a possibility, same goes for the home button. The button would stay but might be replaced with the all new iPhone 7 button with haptic engine underneath.
The previous generation had a 7,340 mAh battery, we expect a similar capacity on the new iPad Air 3 as well. Some squeezing might be necessary, depending on the design.
To make the iPad Air 3 a truly acceptable model to the Apple user community, Apple needs to reduce the price tag. At least, a different iPad model should serve different purpose than the existing iPad lineups.
